Why is Hygiene Important in The Food Manufacturing Industry?

Good hygiene is vital & prerequisite, when it comes to the handling and preparation of food. It is obvious due the fact that various serious illnesses and even causalities can be caused by bad food hygiene. Regardless of everything, the food industry, employers and staff have not only, a duty of care but also legal and moral obligations towards consumers & customers. Government have laid down various rules and regulations which must be adhered to and management & owners must make sure that all staff are aware of these through comprehensive training and coaching. All employees are responsible for their actions too and are required to abide by rules and regulation. Masks, gloves, hair nets and first aid equipment are all intended to avoid the spread of diseases.

Despite of pandemic of COVID-19 all over the world, hand washing was already established as an extremely important practice, when working with food and its preparation. It includes, an appropriate water flow, cleansing agent and separate towel should always be available. Every food handler should wash hands before and after food preparation, before and after using kitchen utensils, after sneezing, coughing, blowing your nose, after using the toilet, smoking, touching your hair or face and emptying bins. Similarly, it is important not to use food that has been on the floor, even if the floor looks clean.

Do not handle food if you are feeling unwell, have a known infection or have an open and uncovered wound. Using a clean and washable apron will help to prevent any cross contamination of bacteria from clothing to food and vice versa. You should be clean and tidy while you work to avoid accidents as well as preventing any contamination.

All storage equipment, especial cold units, such as fridges and cupboards should be cleaned on a set regular schedule by using an authentic cleaning and sanitizing agent. Surfaces should be properly wiped down before and after contact with food. Never share the surface or utensils used for raw meat or poultry with any other items until it has been cleaned and dried properly. Always cook meat thoroughly and with due diligence.
